Road Report – 08/17/2014

Hey friends! We finished up the European leg of Dream Theater’s tour a couple of weeks ago, and I’ve been enjoying some home time! I’m always amazed at how quickly I jump between touring life and domestic life. It was really clear as I was scrolling through the photos on my camera – one shot was at the end of the last show in Istanbul, and the next shot was my son playing baseball!

The tour went really well and we had a good time out there. I managed to get a lot of shooting in and I got some images that I’m really happy with. Now that I’m home, I really need to finish sorting through all of the shots and catch up on my keywording (the boring housekeeping part of photography). I’ll have to squeeze it in between mountain bike riding and yard work!

We did a couple of festivals, so I got a chance to shoot some other bands that were on those lineups (Anthrax, Airbourne, Dropkick Murphys, and some far away shots of Metallica). Since I do most of my shooting from the side of the stage during DT shows, it was a nice change of pace to get in the photo pit and shoot. It’s a challenge to get your shots and not get in the other photographers’ way – I try to keep a low profile so I’m not blocking anyone’s view.

I also managed to get an end-of-show shot of the final bow for every show on this run. It’s always fun to look back through these and see the crowds at each venue. A couple of these were shot on my iPhone and they came out surprisingly well (I’m planning on writing an article on getting better iPhone shots – I’ve got a couple of tips that have worked out really well for me).

We had a near-rainout in Brescia, Italy – it was pouring rain all day and there wasn’t much cover over the stage. We waited…and waited….and finally it lightened up enough to get the gear out and do a show. I didn’t want to worry about my camera gear getting soaked, so I stuck with my iPhone for the couple of shots I got.

In Berlin a few of us walked to Checkpoint Charlie after the show, and I got a few shots of the guard house and sign there. I’d love to spend a whole day shooting in Berlin – maybe next tour!

I also got to hang a bit with my friend Darko Bohringer, a great photographer from Germany. Darko has been shooting DT for years now, and he has done some amazing work. He also got some shots of me working, which is nice since I never really get any shots of myself.

We worked our way through Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, and Bulgaria before ending in Istanbul, Turkey. The crowds were great!

Next up for us is South America, Asia, and Australia. It should be a great run – the fans in these places get pretty crazy. Until then I’ll be relaxing and catching up on my domestic duties (and doing some shooting around town, of course). Thanks for stopping by and I’ll see you out there!
